Fellowship
Boasting a membership of over 300, The Aberdeen Medico-Chirurgical Society provides the perfect platform upon which to meet fellow medical professionals. The Society hosts a number of events which have been the mainstay of its annual social calendar for a number of years.
In November, a commemoration dinner is held in honour of the Founders of the Society. This is a highlight in the calendar where members and their guests gather to enjoy good fare and fellowship. A tradition of the dinner is the oration given by a member, chosen by the President, and the attendance of an eminent guest speaker.
A less formal Burns’ Supper, shared with students from the Aberdeen Medical Society, is held in January.
An annual Cabaret Evening (aka “Famous for Five Minutes”) has proved popular, showcasing musical and other talent within our medical community and raising substantial amounts of money for charity.
The History of Medicine in the North East of Scotland is highlighted at regular Heritage Events.
Sporting social events include the President’s Golf Cup giving members the chance to compete for a handsome trophy donated in 1920 by Professor Sir Ashley Mackintosh, Regius Professor of Medicine at the University of Aberdeen from 1912 to 1928.
The Aberdeen Medical Golfing Society, founded over 50 years ago, also provides opportunity for members, both men and women, to get into the swing of things. A number of golf outings and competitions, as well as keenly contested matches against other learned societies, take place through the year.
